About Puro Rofe Mentidero Blanco

When we think of Lanzarote, we often envision lunar landscapes, volcanoes, and a light that seems unlike any other part of the world. Yet beneath this almost magical appearance lies a secret ingredient that breathes life into its wines: the rofe.

Rofe is a lightweight volcanic ash formed after eruptions. Its dark hue and porous texture are not only captivating to the eye; they help retain moisture in the soil and shield the vine roots from the wind and extreme temperatures. For centuries, the farmers of Lanzarote have mastered the art of harnessing this natural resource, adapting to a landscape that, at first glance, might appear inhospitable. Thus, the uniqueness of La Geria was born: vineyards planted in conical pits, encircled by dry stone walls, resembling small oases of life amidst the lava.

In this context emerges Puro Rofe, a project that encapsulates the essence of the island in every bottle. From this fortuitous natural occurrence, combined with the dedication of winemaker Carmelo Peña and the nonconformist spirit of wine distributor Rayco Fernández, it arises to express the character of the island like few others. A project that has turned rofe into a canvas for viticultural creativity.

Among its wines, Puro Rofe Mentidero Blanco stands out, born from the Mentidero plot in the locality of Masdache. There, a comprehensive harvest takes place, gathering listán blanco, malvasía, listán negro, and diego simultaneously. The result is a field blend that embodies the terroir's diversity in a single bottle.

The winemaking process is equally meticulous. First, the grapes undergo direct pressing, then the must ferments 50% in steel and 50% in barrels, with the wine aging for 6 months in oak barrels. Finally, it is bottled without fining or filtering, preserving the wine's authenticity and the essence of the rofe.

Puro Rofe Mentidero Blanco is proof that even in the most challenging places, nature and human creativity can unite to create something extraordinary. A genuine testament to the untamed character and unique beauty of the island.
