About Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Chardonnay

Pyramid Valley Chardonnay is a biodynamic white wine, aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, made by the Pyramid Valley Winery in North Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand.

Mike and Claudia Elze Weersing arrived here after a 15-year journey to find the perfect place to grow grapes. Finally, they found it here, on the Waikari estate, where they discovered the unique environment of high altitudes, limestone, slopes and very rich soils. Since then, this couple has spent 20 years making single-variety Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines that have achieved worldwide recognition, like Pyramid Valley Chardonnay.

This vineyard’s vines are planted at an altitude of 250 to 300 metres above sea level, on limestone and clay soils. The cultivation and care of the plant is based on biodynamic principles, following the lunar cycles and preparing natural remedies that are totally respectful of the environment. They say that thanks to this philosophy, they are able to be in perfect “harmony with each of the vineyards”.

In the winery, the work is based on these same principles with the use of native yeasts, natural clarification and minimal filtration. After that, Pyramid Valley Chardonnay spends 12 months in French oak barrels. A very elegant New Zealand wine.

2018

Pyramid Valley Chardonnay 2018 is a creamy wine, with a golden lemon hue. The nose is very attractive, with fruity and citrus (pear) notes. The palate is vibrant and mineral, with tension, revealing very savoury acidity. Very fine and elegant.
