About Quinta do Monte Xisto Oriente Tinto
Son of the great Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, the master behind the iconic Douro wine Barca Velha, he started out in wine not by vocation, but because his father told him that if he became an oenologist, he would send him to study in Bordeaux. At a time when France was the center of all innovation, it was an irresistible attraction for the young man. Once there, he eagerly and enthusiastically absorbed all the winemaking knowledge and, although he received many proposals to stay for his doctorate, his sole objective was to return to his native Portugal to apply all the knowledge he’d acquired and show the world the potential of the Douro. So in 1976 he returned home to begin an important contribution to the development and modernization of viticulture in the Douro. A pioneer in the implementation of tall vines in the Douro, as well as in the study of regional grape varieties, his maxim is to maintain the biodiversity of the terroir. As he himself says, "We’re part of a whole and it’s in this whole that we seek to integrate our project".
Nowadays, he works a total of 10 hectares of vineyards with his children in his winery João Nicolau de Almeida & Filhos in the Upper Douro sub-region, in Vila Nova de Foz Côa. This is where Quinta do Monte Xisto Oriente Tinto comes from, a red wine made with the indigenous Tinta câo and Tinta Francisca varieties, from two small east-facing plots, hence the name Oriente. These vines are cultivated using environmentally-friendly agriculture and organic treatments, and the harvest is carried out manually in 20 kg boxes. Once in the winery, vinification is carried out in cement vats with native yeasts and then the wine is aged for a period of 18 months in 600-liter barrels.
Like all the wines from this intrepid winemaker responsible for raising up Douro wines, Quinta do Monte Xisto Oriente Tinto is an attempt to return to the roots. An elegant, refined and very well oriented wine.
| 2019 |
Quinta do Monte Xisto Oriente Tinto 2019 is a concentrated red wine with delicate aromas of fresh red fruits accompanied by exotic notes. A medium-bodied wine with an excellent balance between volume, fruit and acidity. The finish is long, silky and with touches of spice. |
