About Quinta do Monte Xisto

Quinta do Monte Xisto is a wood-aged red wine made by João Nicolau de Almeida & Filhos, a winery in the DOC Douro that produces a concentrated wine with the Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Souson native varieties.

The Monte Xisto wine estate lies in the town of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, in the sub-region of Douro Superior. This is where the Nicolau de Almeida family has worked for years, always respecting the biodiversity they find there. This family are pioneers in vertical planting in the Douro, which optimises the different levels of exposure and altitude. Now João Nicolau de Almeida e Filhos combines the ideas and expertise passed down through two different generations. A real achievement that enriches a very interesting family project.

The steep hill where the Quinta do Monte Xisto vineyard lies is made up of schist. This is the best place for the Quinta do Monte Xisto grapes to grow and develop a strong and unique character. The vines are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually in 20 kg boxes.

In the winery, the Quinta do Monte Xisto grapes are vinified in granite mills and pressed by foot. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts and lasts 6 days. The wine then ages for 18 months in 600-litre French oak barrels. All of this results in a red wine with a very unique personality that is full of fruit and vitality.
