About Reyneke Biodynamic Chenin Blanc

An adventure and science fiction novel written by Canadian Yann Martel, “The Life of Pi” tells the story of Pi, a young castaway who spends more than two hundred days on a small boat with a Bengal tiger and experiences a personal journey of self-improvement and self-knowledge. It is from here that the author draws the Latin proverb “Nil magnum, nisi bonum” (there can be no greatness without goodness), a phrase that has served as the inspiration for Reyneke Wines to produce all their biodynamic wines. As they would say, it is vitally important to surround yourself with good people, to keep learning and to not give up if you want to enjoy a bright future.

The winery has been owned by the Reynekes since 1988, but the estate, located in the heart of Stellenbosch in South Africa’s Coastal Region, dates back to 1863. A total of 120 ha of which 80 ha are covered with vineyards coexisting with cattle and herds. All wines are vegan-friendly and certified biodynamic and the company’s main goal is to find a balance between profit, people and nature. This is clear to see in Reyneke Biodynamic Chenin Blanc, a single-variety Chenin Blanc white wine from the estate’s oldest vineyards (from 1974 and 1976). In the winery, the grapes are pressed in whole bunches and lightly rested and decanted before natural fermentation begins. The wine is then aged for 10 months in 300-litre second year oak barrels and 2,500-litre foudres before bottling.

Based on a minimal intervention approach and in communion with man and nature, Reyneke Biodynamic Chenin Blanc is a white wine from old vines that explicitly defines the philosophy of this South African winery. A very expressive wine that comes from a love of nature.

 

2021

Reyneke Biodynamic Chenin Blanc 2021 is a defined white wine with citrus aromas, notes of orange blossom and hints of white fruit. On the palate it is fresh, vibrant and deep. A wine with supreme acidity, a complex mid-palate and a long and persistent finish.
