“I think, therefore I am.” This phrase by René Descartes could aptly encapsulate the philosophy of Johan Reyneke, one of the foremost South African pioneers in organic and biodynamic viticulture. Johan does not merely contemplate; he translates his philosophical musings directly into the vineyard, challenging conventional chemical-laden agricultural practices and seeking a method of working that respects nature, ethics, and self-sufficiency. His journey has taken him from philosophy student to vineyard worker, and ultimately to founder of Reyneke Wines, South Africa's first certified biodynamic winery.

The Reyneke winery is located in Stellenbosch, at the heart of the country's most renowned wine region, surrounded by verdant hills and vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see. Here, Johan's philosophy becomes practice: ducks and cattle naturally manage pests and weeds, grapes are grown without pesticides or chemicals, and every decision is made with sustainability and ecosystem balance in mind. In the 1990s, when few understood what "organic" meant, Johan was already convinced that it was the only way to make wine that respected the land and its people. Today, even the packaging of his wines has been redesigned to reduce the carbon footprint, demonstrating that his commitment to sustainability extends far beyond the vine.

His Reyneke Biodynamic Estate Sauvignon Blanc is a clear manifestation of this philosophy in action. The sauvignon blanc grapes are hand-harvested and chilled overnight to preserve their freshness. In the winery, they are whole-bunch pressed and allowed to settle naturally, fermenting spontaneously in 300 L oak barrels. After 9 months of aging on the lees in a combination of first, second, and third-fill barrels, the wine is racked and receives only its first addition of SO₂ before bottling. The result is a sauvignon blanc brimming with freshness, aromatic subtlety, and harmony.
