About Rodrigo Méndez O Raio da Vella Espadeiro

Many winemakers choose to label their wines in tribute to their forebears, the true mentors who have steered them on the righteous path of winemaking. In the case of Rodrigo Méndez, an esteemed producer from Rías Baixas (Galicia), he opted to name his most intimate venture "O Raio da Vella" (the old lady of the lightning) in homage to his great-grandmother, who was known in her village by this moniker due to her strong and fiery nature. Indeed, the imagery of lightning is a recurring motif in this vintner's work. It symbolizes the energy and might of nature, encapsulating the zeal and commitment he brings to his craft. Moreover, the name "O Raio da Vella" also conveys a broader meaning, reflecting Rodrigo Méndez's philosophy of crafting genuine and forthright wines, born of the terroir and the historical narrative of the Val do Salnés region.

Thus was born Rodrigo Méndez O Raio da Vella Espadeiro, a red wine crafted from the local espadeiro grape variety, sourced from a single vineyard spanning 1.5 Ha that Méndez planted alongside his friend and oenologist Carlos Pazo. Situated in Castrelo (Salnés Valley), nearly touching the Atlantic Ocean, this vineyard, where one can find local varieties such as albariño, caíño, and espadeiro, is distinguished by its soil composed of sand and kaolin with a granitic origin. A respectful approach to agriculture is practiced, and once the grapes reach their optimal ripeness, they are hand-harvested in small crates. In the winery, the grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts in used wooden vessels, where they remain for 11 months.

Under a name that embodies passion, reverence, and commitment, Rodrigo Méndez O Raio da Vella Espadeiro presents itself as an Atlantic red wine that expresses its true nature. It is the third creation from this modest project by Rodrigo Méndez, offering you the chance to savor its vitality and authenticity in the glass.

 

2019

Rodrigo Méndez O Raio da Vella Espadeiro 2019 is a supple red wine exuding scents of red fruit, herbaceous undertones, and mineral nuances. On the palate, it is sumptuous, invigorating, and refined. A delicate wine characterized by its zesty acidity and seamlessly integrated tannins. The finish is extensive and imbued with a saline quality.
