About Rodrigo Méndez Cíes Tinto

When we talk about big names, we imagine people in the spotlight. However, in the world of wine this is not always the case. Most of the major experts take great care of their privacy and prefer to stroll quietly through their vineyards than be well known in society. Rodrigo Méndez, a name with deep links to Rías Baixas (Galicia) and one of the great winemakers of the Spanish wine world, is a great example of this. Involved in different projects at the same time, his respect for the vines and sincerity in the way he works have made him a cult reference, yet he never shouts about it. His most personal project is the one that bears his own name. A family winery located in Meaño (Pontevedra) and set up in 2011 with the aim of showcasing the best of the Atlantic wines. Vibrant wines with wonderful acidity that inevitably lead to fame.

Among his achievements is Rodrigo Méndez Cíes Tinto. A splendid red wine born in a land of white wines. Caiño Tinto, Loureiro and Espadeiro vines on granitic sandy soils at an altitude of 70 metres planted by his grandfather at a time when everyone was pulling up red vines and opting for Albariño. He took advice from the great Rául Pérez and began a respectful viticulture with limited yields. Following a manual harvest, the varieties are vinified separately in the winery. Destemmed grapes fermented in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging for 12 months in used French oak barrels (225 litres) and 1,500-litre foudres.

With Rodrigo Méndez Cíes Tinto, a fresh, fine and saline wine that clearly displays its Atlantic profile, Rodrigo Méndez shows us that there is more to Rías Baixas than Albariño. A real achievement that has taken this humble winegrower inevitably to the pinnacle of great producers.

Rodrigo Méndez Cíes Tinto 2020 is a supple red wine with intricate aromas of abundant red fruit, floral undertones, mineral hints, and spiced nuances. On the palate, it is fruit-forward, refined, and invigorating. This wine possesses a slight saline character with a radiant acidity and delicate tannins. The finish is extensive and immensely satisfying.
