About Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Prestige

Genuine cultural legacies of wine have been able to protect the winemaking tradition through the centuries to preserve it but without ever causing it to lag behind. This is true for Roger Sabon, one of the oldest family wineries in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the Rhône (France), which has managed to maintain its vineyards and passion for wine since 1540. As Robert Parker says “The style here is a brilliant combination of the best traditional techniques coupled with a handful of modern nuances”.

But although the beginnings date back to the 16th century, the truth is that the wine business really took off at the beginning of the 20th century when Séraphin Sabon married Marie Jausset and took over his wife’s family business. They had three sons and one of them, Roger, set up Le Domaine Roger Sabon, a winery that currently has two properties. On the left bank of the Rhône, they have 18 hectares of vineyards in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape denomination, spread over 14 different plots, and on the right bank, a vineyard of 12 hectares in the Lirac denomination, 6 hectares of Côtes du Rhône and 14 hectares of Vin de France.

One of their carefully selected productions is Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Prestige, a cuvée made from the Garnacha Tinta, Syrah and Mouvèdre varieties and a small amount of other red varieties like Cinsault, Counoise, Vaccarèse, Muscardin and Terret Noir. These are very old vines planted in mixed soils of clay, sand and limestone, where respectful agriculture is practiced. The grapes are harvested by hand early to preserve their natural acidity. Then in the winery, the sorted and crushed grapes are fermented at a controlled temperature, half in stainless steel tanks, half in concrete tanks. The extraction is slow and constant with a long maceration of approximately 1 month. Finally, the wine is aged in large barrels of different shapes and sizes for 18 months.

The result is Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Prestige, an exuberant, full-bodied and silky wine that honors its place of origin, the AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape, without forgetting its own style.

2019

Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Prestige 2019 is a richly concentrated red wine bestowing refined aromas of ripe red and black fruits, smoky undertones, and hints of spices. On the palate, it is warm, opulent, and exceptionally harmonious. This wine boasts a remarkable depth, tightly knit tannins, and a finish that is as profound as it is flavorful.
