Casa Balaguer Salicornio Malvasía is an orange wine crafted from the malvasía grape variety by Casa Balaguer-Vinessens in the Valencian Community (Spain).
Rafa Bernabé Navarro is a winemaker from Alicante who embarked on his venture in 2000 with the aim of producing distinctive and unique wines, reviving indigenous varieties. In 2017, he transferred the winery to Andrés Carull, Marta Ribera, and the Vinessens winery family under the name Casa Balaguer. Despite the change in ownership, the philosophy remains unchanged, with the wines continuing to be limited productions, organic, and minimally intervened.
Casa Balaguer Salicornio Malvasía originates from vines planted just a few metres from the sea, in the Natural Park of La Mata, in Alicante. Organic farming is practised to achieve the utmost expression of the Levantine terroir, and the harvest is carried out manually in small plastic crates with a selection of clusters in the vineyard.
In the winery, the grapes of Casa Balaguer Salicornio Malvasía macerate with their skins at ambient temperature for 5 days, and spontaneous fermentation begins with native yeasts. Midway through fermentation, they are pressed, and the fermentation of the must concludes with subsequent ageing without skins on lees for several months in concrete tanks under a layer of flor.
Named after a shrub that thrives in saline environments, Casa Balaguer Salicornio Malvasía is an orange wine worthy of its name. A wine that is quintessentially Mediterranean with a pronounced saline character.
