About Sassotondo Numero Sei

Carla Benini, an agronomist by profession, had a dream. She left behind the hectic world of the city, with office meetings, plane rides and hotel stays, to dedicate herself to what she was really passionate about: the vineyard. So, without hesitation, she and her husband, the documentary filmmaker Edoardo Ventimiglia, left Rome in 1990 to move to their new small estate. This was a derelict estate of 72 hectares located between Sorano and Pitigliano, in the Tuscan Maremma (Italy), where under the name of Sassotondo they are building a renovated winery to produce genuine wines from their original volcanic terroirs.

After years of hard and persistent work, the first harvest arrives and with them the first wines. Sassotondo Numero Sei is a orange wine made from a blend of Greco and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. These vines are over 20 years old from a single cru vineyard in the area that was once the Bolsena volcanic basin. They are cultivated using organic treatments that won’t harm the vines. After a strictly manual harvest, the grapes are vinified separately. The Sauvignon is fermented in stainless steel tanks with short maceration and the Greco with a prolonged period on the skins and then in barrels. Finally, the wine is aged for 12 months in second-use barrels and rests in bottle for 12 months before release.

So, Sassotondo Numero Sei is a fresh, original and fragrant coupage. A orange wine from the DOC Maremma Toscana DOC that demonstrates that this previously under-explored area of Tuscany has immense potential waiting to be discovered.

2019

Sassotondo Numero Sei 2019 is a defined white wine with citrus aromas, notes of flowers and white fruits and hints of wood. The palate is pleasant, vibrant and well structured. It has very good acidity, freshness and a long finish with a persistent balsamic background.
