About Schoenheitz Audace

In French, audace means “bold” or “daring”. It's the word you would use to describe someone who fearlessly ventures into the unknown... or a wine that decides to break the mould. If there is a corner in Alsace (France) that embodies such audacity, it is Val Saint Grégoire, the only vineyard in the region classified as a mountain area.

Here, the vines climb steep slopes facing south and southeast, reaching up to 550 metres, the highest point of the Alsace appellation. It’s not your typical stroll along the Wine Route. These somewhat secluded plots have learned to coexist with altitude and rigorous climate since the Middle Ages, taming Alsatian varieties with their own character.

The winery Schoenheitz—for decades the sole bottler in Wihr-au-Val—changed hands in 2023, when Adrien Schoenheitz decided not to continue with the family estate. Today, the baton is carried by Jean-Philippe Manches, also at the helm of La Grange Cochard in Beaujolais, and determined to uphold the daring spirit that the name Audace demands.

Schoenheitz Audace is a Riesling that looks the stereotype in the eye and smiles wryly. Aged in barrels for 8 months, it retains the vibrant freshness typical of the variety, but adds volume, texture, and an unusual complexity for the region. The secret lies in low yields and vines that produce less, but better.

Schoenheitz Audace is a wine that doesn't ask for permission to be different, and it demonstrates that, on occasion, true elegance lies in daring.
