About Sclavos Synodos

For some years now, the Greek wine industry has been championing its native varieties. The result is proving to be a success; and part of the responsibility for this lies with Evriviadis Sklavos.

Evriviadis Sklavos, the latest generation of the Sklavou family, took over the business in 1990 with his wife Elma. At that time, when Evridiadis took over the family inheritance, a new chapter in the history of this company began, written from a biodynamic perspective. So that means vines aged over 65 years old growing on the Paliki peninsula on the Ionian island of Kefalonia, are now cultivated manually, without chemicals and following the lunar calendar. This gave birth to a new generation of wines, including Sclavos Synodos, one of the island’s most outstanding labels.

Sclavos Synodos is a blend of Vostilidi and Mavrodafni, two native varieties that grow in limestone and loamy soils, in a temperate climate where the influence of the sea is clear to see. The sea water (which releases heat) and the breezes (which cool the environment) act as temperature regulators, getting rid of the acidity and ripening problems that are so common in the rest of the Greece. Therefore, the grapes slowly reach optimum ripeness and the harvest begins at the beginning of September. After harvesting, which is carried out by hand, Sclavos Synodos is macerated for a long time and left to ferment in French Allier oak barrels (with a capacity of between 300 and 500 litres). Malolactic fermentation also takes place here (always with native yeasts) and the wine will be aged for at least 12 months in these containers.

Traditionally, the Mavrodafni variety has been used to make sweet wines; and Sclavos is the first winery to vinify it dry. Then there is Vostilidi, the rarest and most authentic variety in Greece. Separately, two very interesting grapes and productions. Together, Sclavos Synodos becomes an unbeatable wine.

2019

Sclavos Synodos 2019 is a concentrated, deep purple-red coloured red wine. The nose is very aromatic, with notes of red fruits and blueberries. The palate is also intense, with a well-balanced and tasty acidity. Structured and full-bodied tannins. Lingering and intense finish.
