About Sergio Mottura Orvieto Secco

At Sergio Mottura, tradition is the basis for the future. The history of this winery, located in the picturesque village of Civitella d'Agliano (an hour and a half from Rome), began in 1933 when the Mottura family, originally from Piedmont, arrived in this village between Rome, Florence and Sienna. Until that time Domenico Mottura grew mint and mint oils while his brother Alessandro, who was an engineer, took advantage of his work constructing the railroad between Milan and Naples to buy the estate and a medieval palace in the centre of the village.

That happened in 1933. This family is still running the business today, led by Sergio Mottura (Domenico’s son and Alessandro’s nephew), who took over in the 1960s. At that time Sergio, who was clearly committed to organic agriculture, was faced with the challenge of moving from a sharecropping system to direct farming, but one thing was always clear to him: the key to achieving transformation was in that land, the guardian of tradition and typical varieties. The result is clear to see in Sergio Mottura Orvieto Secco, a white wine produced in the I.G.T. Civitella d'Agliano, which is made exclusively from the vineyards that the third generation of the family cultivates in this village. Here the Grechetto and Procanico (two of the area’s typical varieties) grow on tufa, a soil of volcanic origin that retains moisture perfectly, is not very compact and is easy to work. Thanks to this ability to retain water, the vines can withstand and survive the dry summers and low rainfall.

Sergio Mottura Orvieto Secco is harvested and vinified separately by hand. Once the grapes have been picked, they are gently pressed. The must is left to settle for a few days at a low temperature so that the herbaceous substances (which cause bad aromas and flavours) precipitate and the must is left clean. This is known as racking. After this, Sergio Mottura Orvieto Secco is placed in stainless steel tanks, where it will undergo alcoholic fermentation at a low temperature (between 18º-20ºC). Once the process has finished, the wine remains on its lees for a few months in these tanks until it is finally bottled (but not before being blended). Sergio Mottura Orvieto Secco spends two months in the bottle before being sold. Orvieto white wine is one of the oldest and best known Italian wines. Its history goes back to the Etruscans, who made it. To know where you are going, you have to be very clear about where you have come from. Sergio Mottura knows this well. Note! We predict a good future for this winery.
