Sergio Mottura Tragugnano is a very special wine. Direct from the south of the D.O.C. Orvietto Classico (specifically from the area in Lazio) comes this white made with the best grapes from Tragugnano, one of the Mottura family’s oldest vineyards. According to Giuseppe Mottura, the third generation of the family to run the business, for them this vineyard is the same high standard as a French grand cru. It could be considered the great jewel in the crown. And this is clear to see when Giuseppe talks about it and presents Sergio Mottura Tragugnano, a blend of Grechetto, Procanico and Sauvignon.
These grapes grow on tufa, a soil of volcanic origin, which retains moisture. Cultivation is entirely organic. This is proven by the presence of the porcupine, an animal that only lives in the purest and most natural lands. Proud of this fact, since this philosophy was implemented by Sergio Mottura, Giuseppe's father, in the 1960s, the family has adopted this animal as a symbol of the winery. The location between Lake Bolsena and the Tiber Valley (which guarantees humidity), with low rainfall winters and very hot summers, add the finishing touches that make Sergio Mottura Tragugnano unmistakable.
During the harvest, the grapes are picked by hand and vinified separately with love, respect and care. After a gentle pressing, the must is racked and once clean, it is transferred to stainless steel tanks, where it ferments at a controlled temperature (between 18ºC-20ºC). It stays here, on the lees, until the end of March. During this resting time, the wine continues its journey: the dead yeasts bring unctuousness and body to the wine, while the cold of winter helps Sergio Mottura Tragugnano to clarify naturally. Finally, in the spring, they select and assemble the various tanks, resulting in the perfect blend for Sergio Mottura Tragugnano.
Once bottled, this white spends another two months in the bottle before being released for sale; but if you can be patient and resist the temptation to open it, a short time of aging at home can uncover and showcase the best nuances and profiles of this complex and interesting wine.
