About Siflogo Brousko

The most famous homecoming in history is undoubtedly that of Ulysses. The Odyssey, a story dating back to the 8th century written by Homer, tells of the adventures and misadventures of the king of Ithaca (present-day Ionian Islands) who takes 10 years to return to his kingdom. It is with this image of homecoming that professor, writer and winemaker Dionysis Papanikolopoulos presents his Siflogo Brousko, a red wine closely linked to the tradition of the island of Lefkada, one of the Ionian Islands, and one that showcases the purity of the Vertzami star variety. The truth is that the project that Dionysis started with his wife Maria in 1994 aims to be an ode to local heritage, culture and history. A work of recovering native varieties in their purest state and that under the name “Siflogo”, which means the point all flames meet, maintains the passion of a warm tradition.

Their Siflogo Brousko is a red wine from vines located in the mountains of Lefkada. Cultivated using organic principles and in an artisan way, once the grapes reach the winery, they undergo a traditional vinification process ensuring that the fermentation process is completely natural. The grapes macerate in stainless steel tanks for 6 days and then ferment spontaneously for 25 days. Malolactic fermentation is also carried out naturally and then the wine matures in 4th year French oak barrels for 18 months. Finally, the wine is bottled without clarifying or filtering and only adding minimal sulphites.

So, like Homer’s mythical story, Siflogo Brousko represents a homecoming, a return to the origins through a traditional vinification of the most famous grape variety of the island of Lefkada, Vertzami.  Authentic tradition in its purest form.

The palate is fresh and direct, with a light texture that makes it easy to drink. Ripe red fruit flavours dominate, complemented by well-balanced acidity that provides a clean, refreshing finish. This young red wine is a perfect choice for those seeking freshness and uncomplicated fruit expression.

The palate experiences a vivacious, delectable, and crisp sensation. This medium-bodied wine boasts a pronounced acidity, robust tannins, and an enduring, invigorating finish.
