About Soalheiro Alvarinho

Soalheiro Alvarinho is an Albariño variety white wine made in the DOC Vinho Verde (Minho) by the Quinta de Soalheiro winery.

Quinta do Soalheiro was founded in 1982 by Joãe Antonio Cerdeira in the Portuguese town of Melgaço and is currently run by his son Luis. They are mostly known for being one of the first Portuguese wineries to make Albariño wines, and they have 14 hectares of vineyards on the banks of the Miño River. Strains that are protected from adverse weather by the surrounding mountain range and cultivated using ecological methods, which means they turn into very special Albariños.

Soalheiro Alvarinho comes from vineyards planted in granitic soils, between 100 and 200 metres above sea level. This area enjoys a particular microclimate and that gives the Albariño variety unique characteristics. Organic agriculture is used at all times, taking into account the biodiversity of the area. The grapes are harvested by hand into small 15 kg boxes and immediately taken to the winery.

In the winery, the Soalheiro Alvarinho grape is pressed, then the must is decanted for 48 hours at a low temperature. Alcoholic fermentation then takes place with selected yeasts at a controlled temperature. After stabilising the wine, it is bottled and rests in the winery for a while until it is released for sale.
