About Soca-rel Politxó Blanc Evolució

Few narratives have so powerfully encapsulated the notion of returning home as Homer's Odyssey. Ulysses, after years of wars and shipwrecks, seeks not only his physical abode but also a reconnection with his identity, his land, and that which gives him meaning. This very spirit inspires many winemakers in Mallorca today, embarking on their own unique journey back: leaving behind fleeting trends to rediscover their roots.

An increasing number of wineries in Mallorca are abandoning the international varieties that dominated decades of production to focus on the immense potential of their indigenous grapes: callet, manto negro, prensal blanc, giró ros… Not only do they align better with current trends—wines that are lighter, less concentrated, fresher—but they also offer a more sustainable and resilient response to climate change.

Initiatives like Soca-Rel, which in Mallorquín means "pure breed," are the result of a profound commitment to the island's native varieties. Its creator, Pep Rodríguez, the viticulture director at Las Bodegas José Luis Ferrer, has developed a project that exclusively works with local varieties, a true homage to forgotten biodiversity.

Rodríguez is a vinyòvol (vine grower in Mallorquín) in every sense. He lives the vineyard all 365 days of the year, converses with the land, interprets the climate, and has a very clear vision of the wine he wishes to create. His project had been in the making for over a decade and finally came to fruition in 2020, a peculiar year, yet fertile with bold ideas.

His first vintage, that of 2019, was a limited edition of 2,000 bottles that vanished during the pandemic. Since then, his wines have astonished with their distinctive, rooted, and vibrant style. A notable example is the Soca-rel Politxó Blanc Evolució, a macabeo aged for four months in barrel, which captivates with its balance and character.

Returning to one's origins, as Ulysses did, is not about being stuck in the past. It is about understanding that some of the most important answers were already in the land, waiting to be rediscovered. Soca-rel Politxó Blanc Evolució is not a wine of ostentation, but of subtleties. It reflects a new way of understanding Mallorcan wine: more authentic, more connected with the land, and better prepared for the future.
