About The Sadie Family Treinspoor

The Sadie Family Treinspoor is an ecological, barrel-aged red wine made with the Tinta Barroca variety by The Sadie Family in the Swartland (Coastal region) South African denomination.

The Sadie Family is a South African winery located in the Swartland wine region. Founded in 1999 by the winemaker Eben Sadie, who produces wines that showcase the natural expression of the terroir. To do this, he works with minimal intervention and without additives, to give the grapes centre stage. Considered to be a promising new South African winemaker, he is also working on other projects like Terroir al Límit in Priorat.

The Sadie Family Treinspoor comes from vines aged over 45 years old planted in decomposed granite and sandstone soils along the old railway line, which is where the name Treinspoor comes from. These are old vines where the leafy foliage protects the clusters from the intense Swartland sun. Ecological agriculture is used and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.

Once The Sadie Family Treinspoor grapes reach the winery, they macerate and ferment spontaneously with native yeasts. Then the wine ages for 12 months in French oak barrels and 3 months in tanks. When it is ready, the wine is bottled without refining or filtering.

The Sadie Family Treinspoor will make you think of the expressive fruit in a wine from the northern Rhone area, with the acidity and tannins that are typical of a Nebbiola from Piedmont. A most elegant combination of different styles.
2018 The Sadie Family Treinspoor is a smooth red wine with aromas of red fruits, mineral notes and spicy touches. On the palate it is elegant and flavoursome with a sharp tannic structure. On the palate it reveals a tasty flavour of cake with delicate touches of tobacco.
