About Valenciso Cemento

If the Valenciso winery in La Rioja Alta stands out for anything, it is for their expert use of cement. In fact, this company, founded by Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso, were the first to use this material in their winemaking back in 1998, in an area where aging in wood led the way, and today they are still surprising us with their wines, like Valenciso Cemento, a red wine made and aged in this material.

As a general rule, the most common material used for aging in the D.O.Ca Rioja is wood. This denomination dictates what material the barrels must be made of, but they say nothing about tanks. And this is where some producers have discovered a wonderful alternative in concrete. However, although it may seem like a novelty, this material was traditionally used up to the 1970s, until stainless steel tanks appeared on the winemaking scene. Now this noble material, which maintains youth and juiciness in wines, is once again becoming more prominent with wines like Valenciso Cemento.

The raw material used for this process must be of the highest quality (if this doesn’t happen, Valenciso prefers not to make wine that year). To this end, the vineyards are organically cultivated from the beginning, although not certified at the moment, avoiding fertilisers and chemicals at all times. All the work is done manually, without machinery, from the harvest to the selection of the grapes. Later, in the winery, they always seek to maintain the character given by the variety of soils (clay-limestone, clay-ferrous and alluvial) and the Atlantic climate of the area (with cold winters, mild summers and average annual rainfall of 650 mm). In short: the best interpretation of cement from beginning to end.

Valenciso Cemento 2021 is a fluid red wine, aged in concrete. On the nose, it features fresh aromas of red fruits such as cherries and raspberries, accompanied by a hint of plum. On the palate, it is vibrant and well-balanced, with a smooth texture and a lingering finish that entices continued enjoyment. Perfect for those seeking an approachable wine brimming with flavour.

Valenciso Cemento 2020 unveils itself with a vivacious and invigorating character. Olfactory, it unfurls a spectrum of scents encompassing both red and black fruits, delicately interwoven with a hint of floral nuance. Upon tasting, it reveals a succulent texture and a fruit-forward palate, complemented by nuances of spices and nuts. This enticing red wine boasts pure, ripe flavours, refined tannins, and a delectable finish.

Valenciso Cemento 2018 is a juicy, fruity red with a deep red colour and deep hue. The nose is very attractive, with fruity aromas (blueberries, red berries, blackberries) and mocha. The palate is restrained and elegant, with ripe, polished tannins that are well integrated. Clean and silky. Very tasty finish.
