About Vara y Pulgar
Vara y Pulgar is a barrel-aged red wine made by Compañía de Vinos del Atlántico with the native Tintilla variety under the IGP Vinos de la Tierra de Cádiz.
The Compañía de Vinos del Atlántico is a giant winemaker with a presence in the 18 most prestigious denominations on the Iberian Peninsula. The company, which was founded in 2002 by Alberto Orte and Patrick Mata, was created with the aim of continuing the family tradition. A collection of very special wines to show the best of each of the Spanish and Portuguese wine regions.
The vines used to make Vara and Pulgar are from Pago de Balbaína (Cádiz). 90-year-old strains planted in fine albariza soils. These are vineyards recovered from the devastating phylloxera outbreak and cultivated using respectful agriculture with ecological and organic techniques. The grapes are harvested manually when they reach optimum ripeness.
In the winery, the Vara and Pulgar grapes are placed in open cement and stainless steel tanks. They macerate and ferment there for 28 days with daily cap plunges and pump overs. The wine is then pressed and aged in a 10,000-litre cement tank and a 4,000-litre wooden vat for a year. Finally, it rests in used French oak barrels for a total of 10 months.
The name Vara and Pulgar is inspired by the name for a traditional Jerez pruning method. A rare wine made with an ancient variety in the process of recovery. An elegant, voluminous and mineral red.

| 2015 | Vara y Pulgar 2015 is a richly concentrated red wine, exuding aromas of dark berries, violets, and greenery, complemented by mineral nuances and smoky undertones. On the palate, it is robust, vibrant, and dense, with invigorating red fruit flavors. The finish lingers, aromatic and profoundly mineral. | |
