About Vega Sicilia Único

Vega Sicilia Único is an extraordinary red wine made by the Vega Sicilia winery in the Ribera del Duero in Valbuena de Duero in Valladolid.

Vega Sicilia is the most emblematic Spanish bodegas. A historic wine cellar, over 150 years old, which has become a myth, an icon recognized worldwide thanks to the sheer quality of its wines. Vega Sicilia Único is a wine of legend. One of those wines that any amateur longs to taste at least once in their life.

A limited production wine that is made only in the best vintages. It is a blend made from Tinto Fino, with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes come from the oldest vineyards of the estate owned by the winery in Valbuena de Duero, a farm along the Douro river with alluvial clay-limestone soils.

There is an influence of a continental climate together with Atlantic influence, with little rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn and hot summers with plenty of sunshine. Vega Sicilia is characterized by taking great care throughout the process.

The work begins in the vineyard. Pruning is performed to remove bunches and limit the production of each strain, obtaining grapes with great concentration.

The harvest is done manually, selecting the ripest clusters. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak tanks for 15 days at a maximum temperature of 32 ° C. Once completed, it is run off into oak vats where the malolactic fermentation occurs. In these vats, the wine rests for a whole year in order to clarify and settle.

Vega Sicilia Único is aged for at least seven years in French oak manufactured in the cellar. The aging begins in new barrels, and rotates into used barrels with the intention of achieving a perfect balance between wine and wood.

Once bottled, Vega Sicilia Unico rests in the bottle for 3 years before going to market. A long process, which stretches for up to 10 years, gives life to a very special wine, a unique wine.

2015

Vega Sicilia Único 2015 is a red wine that captivates from the very first moment, displaying a powerful and enveloping expression. Its opulent and juicy palate reveals the generosity of the vintage, while the unmistakable elegance of the house remains intact. With a vibrant nose, it showcases notes of black cherries, spices, and a subtle hint of cigar box, while on the palate it offers a medium to full body, marked by fine tannins and a harmonious rusticity, characteristic of the great Ribera del Duero wines. A wine that invites one to immerse in the grandeur of Vega Sicilia.
2014
Vega Sicilia Único 2014 initially presents a reserved bouquet, yet gradually unfolds a symphonic array of scents where ripe black fruits intertwine with delicate spices and an undertone of refined leather. On the palate, it reveals itself as opulent and velvety, boasting a formidable structure and smooth tannins that lead to an extensive and polished denouement. This red wine, with its intricacy and ripeness, epitomizes the depth and craftsmanship of a premium wine that connoisseurs yearn to taste at least once in their lifetime.
 
2013 Vega Sicilia Único 2013 is a complex red wine that in this vintage is subtle, elegant, fresh, silky and precise. A wine that opens up little by little revealing all its nuances and that with the passage of time gains in texture and depth. Perfect to enjoy now and with long and promising bottle aging. Unquestionable elegance and inimitable character.
2012

Vega Sicilia Único 2012 is a singular and sophisticated red, boasting a deep cherry hue with garnet edges. On the nose, it is exceptionally ripe, featuring aromas of black fruit, violets, sandalwood, and nuances of oak barrels (meat, blood) and spices. The palate is expansive and fortified, with ultra-refined and velvety tannins. It is lively, showcasing blackcurrant and cedar notes. The finish is exceedingly prolonged.
2004 A great range of flavours of old but clean wood, with dry and pleasantly bitter tannins from the oak, together with sweet hints from the alcohol. It has a very long finish.

2002 It shows a wide range of aromas of clean old wood, with dry and pleasantly bitter tannins provided by the oak, along with the light texture of the sweetness of its alcoholic content. A very long, purebred red wine.

It has an intense ripe cherry colour, with lively ruby red edges.

In the nose, the toasted notes provided by the wood are dominant. They are released along with the aromas of hazelnuts got during its oxidative evolution during the years in the barrel.
2000 This wine is unique, as its own name indicates (English term for “único”), warm, elegant, persistent, kind, round and an endless number of adjectives that could not describe it completely. An excellent red wine from the D.O. Ribera del Duero.

Ripe cherry red colour, extremely high intensity, very dark and deep.

Fragrant and complex nose, in which toasted aromas of the wood are dominant, together with extremely ripe fruit and balsamic notes. A wine that can be enjoyed for many hours.
1999 Flavor is tasty, complex, ripe tannins and fine bitterness.

Intense ripe cherry color.

Good aroma, ripe fruit, toasted notes and chocolate.
1998 Upon the palate, it reveals nuances of matured wood, yet remains pristine, accompanied by dry, velvety and slightly bitter oak tannins.

It boasts a deep cherry hue.

On the nose, the toasted undertones of the wood are particularly prominent.
