About Verónica Ortega Cáreo

There are women from Cádiz who are born with salt in their veins and a seafaring gaze, but Verónica Ortega swapped the dunes and Levante winds for the serene mist of the Sil valley. For over a decade, she has navigated the hills of Bierzo like a fish in water.

She landed in Valtuille de Abajo in 2010, guided by two indispensable figures in Spanish wine: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez Palacios. However, before putting down roots in Bierzo, Verónica honed her skills with the greats. In Priorat, she worked alongside Álvaro Palacios and Daphne Glorian; later, in the heart of Burgundy, she spent time at Domaine Combier and, most notably, at the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, where she made history as the first woman to join the technical team of the world's most iconic winery.

This blend of rigorous training and free spirit defines her approach to wine: Verónica doesn't merely produce it; she narrates it. Each bottle is a liquid story, a landscape in a bottle. It's no wonder that critics adore her, and she is now among the essential names in the new wave of Spanish wine.


Her latest gem is called Verónica Ortega Cáreo, a Vino de Paraje born from a tiny 0.9-hectare vineyard in San Juan de la Mata, at an altitude of 650 metres. The calcareous terrain, surrounded by forests, hosts century-old vines of mencía, interspersed with clusters of doña blanca, palomino, and godello, which add layers of complexity to a creation with soul.

The vinification of Verónica Ortega Cáreo embodies that balance between tradition and innovation that so characterizes this intrepid winemaker. She employs whole clusters at 80%, applies gentle maceration over five weeks, and allows fermentation to occur naturally in a 3,400-litre oak conical vat. Afterwards, the wine rests for eleven months in French barrels and is then refined for four months in clay amphorae, enhancing its minerality and endowing it with serene elegance.

This is how Verónica Ortega Cáreo is presented to us, a wine that is subtle, profound, and delicately rebellious. Born from limestone, crafted with a Cádiz accent, humour, Burgundian discipline, and just enough flair for half the world to await each new vintage as eagerly as they would the next episode of their favourite series.
