About Viña Mayor El Secreto

Viña Mayor El Secreto is a red wine from the D.O. Ribera de Duero made by Viña Mayor with the Tempranillo variety.

Founded in 1986, Viña Mayor is located in the town of Quintanilla de Onésimo (Valladolid), in the heart of Ribera del Duero. Directed by Almudena Alberca, a young winemaker with a great international reputation and the first woman in the country to be awarded the Master of Wine title, this winery makes red wines in a modern style and with great complexity.

The grapes used to make Viña Mayor El Secreto come from vineyards with an average age of over 60 years, planted in sand, clay and limestone soils. The strains are located at an altitude of more than 900 metres above sea level in a continental climate with Atlantic influences. They use traditional agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually in 20 kilo boxes.

Once the Viña Mayor El Secreto grape reaches the winery, it is manually selected, destemmed and very gently pressed. Then a pre-fermentation cold maceration takes placed over 4 days and the fermentation begins at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. It is then aged for 10 months in French oak barrels. It rests in the bottle for at least 10 months before going to market.

Viña Mayor El Secreto is a red wine that shows how a characteristic Ribera de Duero should be made under the technical direction of Almudena Alberca, the first Spanish woman to be awarded the Master of Wine title.

Viña Mayor El Secreto 2020 unfurls an enchanting bouquet of cherry and blackberry scents, interwoven with subtle hints of balsamic herbs, mild pepper, and delicate violets. Upon tasting, its rounded and succulent character is unveiled, delivering a lively freshness that prevails over any woody undertones. The finish is prolonged, accentuating a mineral texture, achieving a balance that enhances its light and delightful profile.
2015 Viña Mayor El Secreto 2015 is a deep red fruity wine, with aromas of black and red fruits, violet flowers and spicy notes. On the palate it is balanced, flavoursome and elegant with a fresh and mineral edge.
