About Waterkloof Seriously Cool Cinsault

Born to a French father and an English mother, sommelier Paul Boutinot ran a restaurant in the West of England, but his real success came from importing wines. This company continued to grow and gave him what he needed to think about also producing his own wines. But to make truly fine wines with a definite sense of origin, the classic areas like Cote d'Or, Chablis and Paulliac had become prohibitive terroirs with exorbitant prices. That is why in 1993 he began a worldwide search for unique terrain that spanned more than a decade and ended with the discovery of a small area on the south-facing slopes of the Schapenberg in Stellenbosch, South Africa, overlooking the False Bay cape. A small gem that until then had been used by cooperatives and that Boutinot was able to boldly save. This is how Waterkloof Wines was born, one of the most distinguished wineries in the area and one of the best known in the world.

Under the leadership of talented young winemaker Nadia Barnard, wines like this Waterkloof Seriously Cool Cinsault are great ambassadors for Stellenbosch, South Africa’s largest wine region. A Cinsault from 40 and 50 year old bush vines located on the windy maritime slopes of Heldeberg, on soils of granitic rock mixed with sands. This is a hardy variety that is cultivated organically and ecologically. In the winery, they operate with a minimalist approach with the whole clusters fermenting spontaneously with native yeasts and the wine is left in contact with the skins for 30 days. This is followed by malolactic fermentation and, finally, aging in large barrels for 8 months before bottling.

The result of this work is Waterkloof Seriously Cool Cinsault, a red wine with a name that describes it perfectly. On the one hand, the name Cool was given because it is produced in the coldest region of False Bay and because the winemaker recommends serving it at a lower temperature (around 14°C). And then the name Seriously describes a serious wine with unquestionable structure and length. All in all, a memorable wine that thrives on the challenges of the South Atlantic environment.

2019

Waterkloof Seriously Cool Cinsault 2019 is a concentrated red wine with intense aromas of pink flowers, red fruit notes and light hints of toast. On the palate it is rich, flavoursome and complex. A medium to full-bodied wine with a recognisable structure and soft, elegant tannins. The finish is lingering and persistent.
