About Weingut Eymann Gönnheimer Alter Satz

In the wine world, there are trends that seem new but are, in fact, old traditions rediscovered. Alter Satz is one such example. This German white wine style—historically associated with regions like Franconia—revives an ancient practice: planting different grape varieties mixed within a single vineyard and vinifying them together. Instead of separating each variety, the vineyard functions as a small ecosystem where the grapes grow, are harvested, and ferment simultaneously. The result is often a wine that is more complex, spontaneous, and deeply connected to its place of origin.

This philosophy aligns perfectly with the ethos of the Eymann winery, located in Gönnheim, in Germany's Pfalz region. From its inception, the project has been committed to nature-friendly viticulture. As early as the 1980s, Rainer Eymann embraced organic farming, when it was still seen as somewhat rebellious. In 2006, the winery took a further step by obtaining the biodynamic certification Demeter, establishing itself as a leading figure in the movement in Germany.

Today, the project is in the hands of Vincent Eymann, who manages the 18 hectares of vineyard with a clear commitment to sustainability and biodiversity. His wines are renowned for their finesse, structure, and a very clear expression of the terroir.

Within this philosophy fits perfectly Weingut Eymann Gönnheimer Alter Satz. The wine originates from vineyards planted on fluvial deposits of gravel and sand, covered by a layer of loess one to two meters deep. This soil, rich in lime, minerals, and flint, imparts the winery's wines with their characteristic mineral structure and breadth on the palate.

True to the spirit of Alter Satz, the varieties are cultivated and fermented together. In this instance, the blend combines riesling, muskateller, and gewürztraminer, three grapes that naturally complement each other. The spontaneous fermentation allows the wine to express its character without artifice. The riesling contributes tension and freshness, while the other varieties add aromatic nuances and texture.
