Xérico is a red wine from D.O. Ca. Rioja, produced byTentenublo Wines in Viñaspre, a region in Lanciego, in Rioja Alavesa.
Tentenublo Wines is the personal project of Roberto Oliván, a young winemaker from Álava who belongs to the new generation of young oenologists from La Rioja. In 2011, Roberto took charge of his mother’s old winery in Lanciego and began to produce wines following the traditional methods of La Rioja while giving them a more modern touch, seeking greater freshness and with less prevalence of woods.
The Tentenublo winery has 7.5 hectares of its own vineyards located in the municipalities of Lanciego and Viñaspre, in the very heart of Rioja Alta. Divided into 22 small plots, they cultivate varieties like Grenache, Tempranillo and Viura, along with minority varieties like the extremely rare Calagraño. The age of the vineyards ranges from 15 years to more than 100, all of them cultivated organically with minimal intervention.
Xérico is a wine made with Tempranillo and Viura grapes from three different plots, Majadonda, El Pedrón and La Entrada, between 15 and 50 years old, located in Viñaspre.
The grapes are harvested by hand and placed in 15kg boxes. Once in the cellar, the grapes are partially destemmed, to ferment spontaneously in open cement tanks. The malolactic fermentation and the 6 months’ aging are carried out in French oak barrels.
Xérico is a fresh, fluid and juicy wine. On the nose, the aromas of fresh red fruit stand out, with spicy notes. On the palate it is intense, with lots of fruit and liveliness. A village wine with a lot of character.
