About Abel Mendoza Suelos

When hardly anyone had faith in the white wines of Rioja or in the revival of varieties like graciano, they were already planting vines and crafting wines that are now considered benchmarks. This is how Abel Mendoza and Maite Fernández began in 1988: a pair of winemakers who embraced the unexpected, guided by patience and respect for the land.

In San Vicente de la Sonsierra, their modest winery became a laboratory and home to a very clear philosophy: to nurture each vineyard with care, cultivate organically, and let the wine speak of the terroir. Their 17 hectares spread across San Vicente, Labastida, and Ábalos form a mosaic of their vision; each plot with its own character, each vintage an honest portrait of the landscape.

Abel Mendoza Suelos is a tempranillo derived from vineyards over 35 years old, meticulously cultivated in the various sites owned by the winery. The harvest is done by hand, selecting each cluster, and fermentation takes place in steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve the fruit. The wine then matures for 12 months in French oak barrels, gaining structure and complexity without losing its essence.

Abel Mendoza Suelos does not speak of fashions or trends; it speaks of the land, of old vines, and of hands that work with dedication and respect. It is a Rioja to be savoured slowly and is recognised for its authenticity.
