Akutain Reserva Selección 2014 is a wine that captivates at first sight with its deep and alluring colour. When brought to the nose, it reveals intense aromas of black fruits such as blackberries and plums, embellished with subtle spicy hints of vanilla and cinnamon, the result of its meticulous ageing in oak barrels. On the palate, it is elegant and well-structured, offering rich and concentrated flavours, with firm yet well-integrated tannins, and an acidity that balances each sip. The 2014 vintage stood out for its optimal climatic conditions, which allowed for perfect grape ripening, resulting in a wine of great body and complexity. Recommended for its excellent ageing potential, promising to evolve beautifully over time, or to be enjoyed in its full youth.

About Akutain Reserva Selection

Are you aware of the distinction between a Reserva and a Reserva Selección? At Bodega Akutain, they have it perfectly clear! It is a wine crafted as a classic Reserva, but with a certain "je ne sais quoi"...

It all began in the 1970s, when Juan Peñagaricano Akutain decided to pursue a dream: to make wine in the heart of Rioja Alta. After years of learning from the greats (CVNE, La Rioja Alta...), he found his ideal spot near Haro, and thus, it all commenced.

Today, his son Jon Peñagaricano manages the winery with the same passion and precision, keeping the "château à la riojana" philosophy alive. That is to say, small production, utmost care, and classic ageing.

The starting point lies in their own vineyards, with vines aged 25 to 40 years on clay-limestone soils. The grapes—predominantly tempranillo, with a touch of garnacha and viura—are hand-harvested and ferment for 9 days in stainless steel. Then, they rest during the winter with natural rackings before moving to barrels.

The ageing process is the classic Rioja style, with 38 months in American and French oak, and regular rackings. But here comes the special touch. In some vintages, 2 or 3 barrels stand out for their evolution and quality. These are selected, given a little extra ageing in specific barrels, and then rest for at least 12 months in the bottle.

The result? A refined, expressive, and highly personal wine. Akutain Reserva Selection is Akutain's hidden gem. The same classic soul, but with a unique twist.
