About Algueira Merenzao Risco

For years, Fernando Algueira and his wife Ana Pérez dedicated themselves to cultivating 11 hectares of abandoned vineyards in Lugo (in the northwest of Spain), along the banks of the Sil River. No one said the work was easy, but why not take the plunge? The initial efforts gave way to enthusiasm. This enthusiasm led to discoveries, among them a group of red grape varieties, little known, yet remarkably intriguing. Why not craft a red wine on par with a great Galician white? Eventually, all this work culminated in the red wine Algueira Merenzao Risco. 
 
As its name suggests, Algueira Merenzao Risco is a single-varietal wine with the soul of merenzao. Specifically, this red grape variety is one of the most fascinating in the D.O. Ribeira Sacra, and although not widely cultivated, its name is gradually gaining recognition and carving out a niche in the oenological world. More information about it is becoming known (in France, it is also grown under the name Trousseau, it is a variety highly susceptible to fungi, requiring many hours of sunshine for ripening, it is also found in northern Portugal, though no one knows how it arrived in Spain...); however, 20 years ago, Fernando and Ana had to learn to understand, know, and unveil all its secrets: its evolution, behavior, and development on the slate, quartz, and schist soils that abound on the slopes of this estate in the D.O. Ribeira Sacra. 
 
At the Algueira winery, each variety is cultivated in a separate plot. And each of these plots is vinified individually. Algueira Merenzao Risco is the exception that proves the rule, as the grape clusters for this red come from various vineyards with a common factor: their southwest orientation and their Mediterranean microclimate with Atlantic influences. These clusters are harvested and treaded directly by foot (depending on the vintage, sometimes even with stems), in 600-litre barrels where Algueira Merenzao Risco undergoes maceration. This blend, where the skins will be in contact with the must, will be carried out cold until the fermentation of Algueira Merenzao Risco begins. Until then, the temperature will remain low to prevent the yeasts from becoming dormant and unable to start working. Once the mercury rises, this unicellular fungus will get to work, converting the sugars (glucose) into alcohol (ethanol) and carbon dioxide. In the case of Algueira Merenzao Risco, this process will take place in stainless steel tanks and French oak (where this red wine will rest for approximately six months). 
 
Throughout this process, the yeasts will be indigenous, native to the region, ensuring that Algueira Merenzao Risco is a pure reflection of the terroir of the D.O. Ribeira Sacra. An uncompromisingly bold red wine!

On the nose, it reveals notes of red fruits such as cherries and strawberries, accompanied by a subtle hint of spice. This red wine is distinguished by its floral and herbaceous aromas with balsamic undertones. On the palate, it is harmonious, almost silky, with mature tannins. A crisp finale.
