About António Madeira A Liberdade

The gentleman we are discussing could have remained in Paris, surrounded by restaurants, galleries, and a comfortable lifestyle. Yet, in 2010, he made a somewhat irrational decision: to return to Portugal without being entirely certain of what he would find. He didn't carry a treasure map, but he did possess a persistent intuition.

What he discovered was not immediate, but rather a journey of discovery through scattered clues: small hidden plots in the Serra da Estrela (Dão), ancient vineyards quietly resisting agricultural modernisation, and granite soils, harsh and sloping, at altitudes between 500 and 600 metres. It was thus that António Madeira began to reclaim indigenous varieties that had been excluded from the official narrative of modern wine.

Today, Dão is experiencing a discreet yet steady renaissance, and Madeira has become one of its most representative voices. His work does not seek uniformity, but rather expression. In his biodynamic vineyards, with more than twenty varieties planted in field blends, each plot tells a different story.

A clear example of this philosophy is A Liberdade, whose name says it all: freedom as exploration without boundaries. Crafted from vineyards of síria, bical, fernão pires, arinto, cerceal, among others, approximately 30 years old, cultivated on granite soils, the wine ferments with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, undergoes malolactic fermentation, and matures for 12 months in steel and used barrels. No clarification, no filtration, and no added sulphites.

In this way, A Liberdade is one of the purest expressions of the region where it was born, at the foot of the Serra da Estrela. For sometimes, freedom is not about venturing far, but rather returning just enough to recognise what has always been there.
