About António Madeira Branco

António Madeira Branco is a white wine coupage of around 20 native varieties like Bical, Fernão Pires, Arinto and Cercial, produced by the António Madeira winery in the DOC Dão in Beiras, Portugal.

The António Madeira Branco wine is made from a mixture of all the white varieties in the António Madeira vineyards. The grapes come from vines ranging in age from 50 to 120 years old that are planted in plots with granite soils and lie at 450 metres above sea level.

The harvest is carried out manually and when the grapes reach the winery, they go through a slow fermentation, which can last up to ten months, with their native yeasts in 500-litre stainless steel tanks. The resulting wine is racked to begin aging. 85% ages in stainless steel tanks and the rest is placed in French oak barrels.

António Madeira is a Frenchman with Portuguese roots who considers that the heart of Dão, one of Portugal’s most interesting wine regions, is in the Serra do Estrela, which is where he can trace his Portuguese roots back to.

Madeira has been researching the area since 2010, and he has managed to rescue interesting vineyards with abandoned old vines growing an impressive number of native varieties. This is winemaking that dates back a long time, where the plots have special granite soils, a good altitude and sun exposure and they are cultivated with great care for the environment. All of these factors result in authentic wines, with an honest personality. An excellent return to origins.
