About António Madeira Vinhas Velhas Branco

António Madeira Vinhas Velhas Branco is a white wine coupage of around 20 native varieties like Syria, Bical, Fernão Pires, Encruzado, Arinto and Cercial, produced by the António Madeira winery in the DOC Dão in Beiras, Portugal.

The António Madeira Vinhas Velhas Branco wine is made from rescued local varieties that come from vines aged between 50 and 120 years old. The vines lie at 600 metres above sea level and grow in granite soils. The harvest is carried out manually, the grapes are selected in the vineyard, and fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts. Throughout the process, no enzymes or chemical wine products are used, and only a minimal amount of sulphur is added if needed.

The resulting wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation and is aged for around two years. During the first year, half the wine is made in 500-litre French and Austrian oak barrels and the other half in stainless steel tanks. The wine is bottled without clarifying or filtering and is left to rest for another 10 to 12 months in the winery before being sold.

António Madeira, a Frenchman with Portuguese roots, shares his declaration of intent with each of his wines. Since 2010, he has dedicated himself to finding the best vineyards in one of Portugal’s highest potential areas and the place where his Portuguese origins come from: the Dão region. He cultivates his plots with care and with maximum respect for the environment, and from these plots he makes wines that showcase the essence of the area: a mix of expressive native varieties with their own personality that are worth rescuing and learning about.
