In the Valtellina area (northern Italy), between the road leading from Santa Anna to Traisso, lies the Nuova Regina vineyard. This is the birthplace of Ar. Pe. Pe. Sassella Riserva Nouva Regina.
Ar. Pe. Pe. Sassella Riserva Nouva Regina is almost a miracle, a true feat of nature that emerges from a terrain where rock flourishes more than the land. This Lombardy winery cultivates most of its old vineyards at an altitude of 450 metres, vineyards which, depending on the vintage, are capable of producing real gems. Here reigns the Nebbiolo di Alpi, the name given to the Nebbiolo in this area, where the variety takes on wonderful characteristics. Here, very close to the Alps, this variety is blessed by the many hours of sunshine, as well as by its southern orientation, which allows it to ripen properly. All of this, together with the poor stony soils, means that the vines concentrate on growing a smaller number of good quality clusters. It’s better to have a small amount of something good than lots of something bad.
In general, the D.O.C. Valtellina Superiore is a fairly hostile area that demands a lot of manual effort, and only expert work by real people will do. Only experienced winegrowers and workers who know the area are able to walk and move along the steep and rugged slopes that are so typical and characteristic of this area. This is the only way to harvest the Ar.Pe.Pe. Sassella Riserva Nouva Regina. Ar.Pe.Pe. Sassella Riserva Nouva Regina is characterised by long maceration and aging. As are all Ar.Pe.Pe. wines, because this is one of the winery’s distinctive features. In general, macerations are no shorter than three months (89 days in the case of Ar.Pe.Pe. Sassella Riserva Nouva Regina) while the time the wines spend in the barrel ranges from two to three years.
As they say on their website, the main tool they have at their disposal at Ar.Pe.Pe. is their patience. A virtue that is not easy to cultivate. Even so, it is worth waiting as long as it takes to enjoy a good glass of Ar.Pe.Pe. Sassella Riserva Nouva Regina.
