About Avondale Anima Chenin Blanc

South Africa is one of the oldest wine producers in the New World. In this country, wine has been an important part of history and culture for more than three centuries. Among South Africa’s major winegrowing areas, northeast of Cape Town, is the W.O. Paarl, a valuable wine-growing area lying under a large granite outcrop (the second largest in the world) that is home to 20% of all the vineyards and some of the best producers in the country. This is where the Grieve family bought Avondale Estate in 1997, a 300-hectare property with three centuries of history, which they are responsible for transforming into an organic estate by introducing organic and biodynamic practices.

With a unique approach to viticulture using modern scientific knowledge to achieve a natural style, they present Avondale Anima Chenin Blanc. A white wine made entirely from Chenin Blanc grapes from vineyards that are between 10 and 35 years old. Certified organic agriculture is practiced and yields are limited to between 4 and 8 tons per hectare. Once the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested by hand and immediately taken to the winery. Structured to work by gravity, the grapes are pressed in whole bunches and then fermented naturally and with low levels of added sulphur, 80% in 500-litre French oak barrels and the remaining 20% in amphorae. Finally the wine ages on lees for 12 months with regular batonnages.

Using the word anima, Avondale Anima Chenin Blanc is intended to be a recognition of the earth’s life force. A land of granitic origin that, treated as it deserves, shares its joy with a delicious wine, it is energetic and has an extraordinary delicacy.
