About Avondale Jonty's Ducks Pekin White

There is no more efficient, healthy and economical way to avoid pests in the vineyard than by using natural methods. Johnathan Grieve, manager of the Avondale South African winery, is very clear on this, and on his property located within the W.O. Paarl, in Coastal Region, he keeps snails, slugs and weeds at bay with a most unusual patrol. A gang of ducks, “Jonty's Ducks”, who walk and peck their way through the vines as natural pest controllers. In honour of these curious and entertaining guardians who prevent the need to use harmful chemical poisons, Grieve dedicates Avondale Jonty’s Ducks Pekin White, an organic, crisp and elegant white wine made from a blend of four varieties that, like all its other wines, is an ode to Mother Nature.

Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier and Semillon are the four grapes used to make Avondale Jonty's Ducks Pekin White.  A blend of organically cultivated white varieties from vineyards with an average age of 25 years old that he owns on the estate. With limited yields for maximum fruit concentration and the impeccable look of Jonty's Ducks keeping the vines healthy, you get a ripe grape ready for winemaking. Harvesting is carried out by hand and, once in the winery, the grapes are pressed whole. Then, part of the must ferments with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks with the rest in 600-litre oak barrels. Finally, the wine is aged on fine lees for a maximum of 9 months.

As the winery itself emphasises, “Terra est vita” (the earth is life), Avondale Jonty's Ducks Pekin White is the result of a statement of intent. A statement that plays out in actions and not just words. They do this by making their wine with a commitment to respecting and preserving mother earth with the help of some nice ducks.

Avondale Jonty's Ducks Pekin White 2018 is a luscious white wine brimming with aromas of exotic tropical fruits, undertones of succulent white-fleshed fruit, and hints of honey. On the palate, it is rich, vibrant, and profound. This white wine showcases a zesty acidity, a luxurious mouthfeel, and an enduring, mineral-laden finish.
