One can achieve excellence without sacrificing humour, as demonstrated by Rayco Fernández and his team at Bimbache Vinícola with their latest release: Miguelito Jackson Blan de Nuar. Yes, you read that correctly. A cheeky nod to the 80s pop icon who endeavoured to "whiten" himself.
The Bimbache project was born from the passion of Rayco and his team for genuine viticulture. Following their initial venture in Lanzarote with Puro Rofe, they relocated to El Hierro (Canary Islands) in 2018, an island seemingly tailor-made for wines with character. With volcanic soils, altitudes ranging from 100 to 1000 metres, and a unique varietal diversity, the territory is a viticultural paradise where they work with their own vineyards and those of small producers in an ecological and sustainable manner.
The name Blan de Nuar already hints at its nature: a nod to the traditional blancs de noirs, but with the irreverence that characterises Bimbache. This 2023 is primarily composed of baboso negro, followed by listán negro, verijadiego negro, listán blanco, and verijadiego, directly pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts. It is bottled without oak, after 9 months on fine lees, and without fining or filtering, to preserve all the freshness and personality of the island.
The result is a wine that embodies the philosophy of Bimbache: authenticity, meticulous care, and a touch of humour, without compromising on quality. Miguelito Jackson Blan de Nuar is fresh, expressive, with fruity notes and subtle reminders of the volcanic earth that gave birth to it.
