About Birichino Scylla Assemblage

Birichino Scylla Assemblage is a wood-aged red wine made in the Santa Cruz mountains, California (USA) by Birichino with the Cariñena, Garnacha Tinta and Mourvèdre varieties.

Alex Krause and John Locke set up their own project in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 2008 and called it Birichino, which means mischievous in Italian. They use grapes from 9 vineyards, some of which are a hundred years old, and their work involves minimal intervention. As a result, they produce bold wines that are full of vitality and surprising minerality.

Birichino Scylla Assemblage is made from a mixture of vines, most of which are hidden old vines that are over 100 years old and are influenced by the sea. The vines are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually in small boxes when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.

In the winery, all the grapes used to make Birichino Scylla Assemblage are destemmed and once they have been crushed, fermentation begins with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Then malolactic fermentation takes place and the wine is aged in used French oak barrels for 12 months.

The name Birichino Scylla Assemblag is inspired by Scylla, the beautiful nymph from Greek mythology who was transformed into a sea monster. Although this wine is fine, light and elegant, it also contains a vibrant mystery within.

 

2018

Birichino Scylla Assemblage 2018 is a smooth red wine with beautiful floral notes accompanied by raspberry, herbaceous touches and earthy hints. On the palate it is light, lively and elegant. A wine with delicate tannins, an airy texture and acidity with a pleasant tension.
