Best Spanish Wines

30/05/2018 Production area

Today we want to talk to you about a difficult task that we have to face from time to time.
People often ask us: which are the best Spanish wines?
Truth be told, it is very difficult for us to talk about best wines. Considering that, in Spain, there are over 4.000 wineries dedicated to making wine, wineries that produce in a wide diversity of climates, with different soils, varieties of grape, winemaking styles, different types of ageing… the list of wines made in Spain becomes endless. This matter makes if fairly impossible to decide on which are the best wines.

top 10 wines

Some like to take into account the scores awarded by the most outstanding critics. For example, wines scored by the Parker Guide are always a sure bet for those who decide to be guided by the opinions of the experts. Surely if this is an expert’s opinion I won’t go wrong.

Others, however, go along with a very different path: small producers. They have plenty of reasons to defend this thesis: the scarcer the production, the better the wine, since by making less quantity they can have greater control over production. They search for quality instead of quantity. Also, in a family business they always put a lot of love into everything they do.

And then we have third group that prefers to consider the experience. How many times have we heard one of our friends say: “At my house we always have wine from the X winery around”? These wineries have great experience, gained from hundreds of years of history. We know exactly what we can expect, and therefore, we minimise the risk of making mistakes.

And what is our answer to this question? Which are the best Spanish wines for us? Our opinion is always the same: there are as many best wines as there are consumers. Because every consumer is entirely different. It’s about starting with a wine that you like. From there on, try to understand the style, try other wines of the area, other varieties, other producers, and start researching from those parameters to form your own opinion.
Ok then. What a politically correct answer, you may say. Well, as we said at the beginning, this isn’t a question with an easy answer.
What we do believe is a good starting point in the search for the best Spanish wines is our list of the 10 best-selling wines. The best red wine and the best white wine. So many consumers can’t be wrong.
