1. Sorte O Soro

Made by Rafael Palacios in the D.O. Valdeorras (Galicia), this single-variety Godello has become the first Galician white wine to achieve the coveted 100 Parker points. Luis Gutiérrez, the expert taster for The Wine Advocate, said that this wine is “ethereal, yet powerful, with a world-class quality that makes it perhaps the best Spanish white of the modern era. The best white wine Rafael Palacios has made so far.” There’s no more to say.
2. Casa Castillo Pie Franco

If we’re talking about the great surprises of the year, we cannot forget the 100 Parker points for Casa Castillo Pie Franco, the first red wine from the Spanish Mediterranean to achieve such a prized score. This wine is made with Monastrell grapes, from ungrafted vines that, thanks to the tenacity and effort of José María Vicente, has managed to position Jumilla (Murcia), a dry land where the Monastrell grape is the absolute queen, among the world’s winemaking elite. This winery and this great wine will be talked about for a long time and is worth keeping an eye on.
3. Raventós i Blanc, Blanc de Blancs
As they have every year since 1988, the editors of the specialist publication Wine Spectator release their Top 100, a list of the 100 most interesting wines and sparkling wines from among the thousands they taste each year. In 29th place is the only sparkling wine from Spain to be included in this privileged list: Raventós i Blanc, Blanc de Blancs. A landscape sparkling wine that reflects the soil it comes from, in the Conca del Río Anoia, a small geographical region of the Penedès (Barcelona). Raventós i Blanc, Blanc de Blancs is a well-structured, fresh and complex sparkling wine with an exquisite mineral touch.
4. Lustau VORS Amontillado
They couldn’t be happier at Lustau! 2022 has been full of joys. Before the end of the year, Sergio Martínez, the winemaker at this Jerez winery, was named “Best Winemaker in Spain” for the fifth consecutive year at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) Merchant Awards. And, as proof of his excellence, an Amontillado, the Lustau Amontillado VORS (30 años), has been awarded 99 points by James Suckling, another renowned wine critic, who also placed it at number 34 in his Top 100 Wines of the World. An Amontillado wine which he described as “sublime, one of the best sherries we have tasted in a long time.” An elegant, superb and deep fortified wine.
5. Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva
At the end of 2021, Wine Spectator unanimously chose the Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial red as “Best Wine in the World” and, since then, it has been non-stop for the Marqués de Murrieta Rioja winery. At the beginning of 2022, María Vargas, technical director, was named “World's Best Winemaker” at the Wine & Spirit Awards and also in 2022 Marqués de Murrieta was placed in the Top 10 wineries with the highest number of 100 Parker points, becoming the only Spanish winery to achieve this. And, as if that wasn’t enough, this Rioja winery has been recognised as “the Best Winery in the World” in the “Best Of 2023” Awards granted by the “Great Wine Capitals Global Network”, in short, a great year for Marqués de Murrieta and for Spanish wine.
People have said that Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva “embodies the attributes that characterise the world’s great wines” and, knowing the amazing journey of Marqués de Murrieta, we think you should try the other wines made by this historic winery, which is a symbol of Rioja’s greatness.
This is just a small sample of the great wine surprises that this year has given us, but, without a doubt, the best thing about 2022 has been your company, which means we can continue to celebrate this passion that unites us together: wine. Happy New Year!
