Wine glasses: Which glass for which wine

10/07/2018 Wine service

After choosing the wine you want to drink, the next important decisions are searching for the correct temperature and choosing a suitable glass to enhance the virtues and hide the weaknesses of the wine.
We already spoke about the correct temperature to serve wine in this post, so today we are going to focus on giving you some tips to choose the correct wine glass, depending on the style of wine you want to drink.

wine glases

Most manufacturers of wine glasses already specify the type of wine for which the glass is intended. Some have even classified the glasses by wine regions or by varieties. That is why we have chosen to offer you several wine glasses by two prestigious brands such as Riedel and Zalto that cover the multiple profiles of wines that we have in our catalogue. Riedel glasses and Zalto glasses are a synonym of quality.

Here is a classification of the different glasses and how they relate to wine styles:

For the most aromatic and fresh white wines, where we want to highlight all the aromatic components and the good acidity, we recommend the Riedel Vinum Riesling Grand Cru wine glasses  or the Zalto Glass for white wine, suitable to highlight all the virtues of white wines such as those from Rias Baixas or Xarello wines from Penedes.

Wine glasses with a wider bowl, in a Burgundy or Pinot Noir style, they are very good for delicate and fragrant wines. In Spain, they are perfect for Grenache wines with little extraction such as those of Comando G in Gredos or those of Álvaro Palacios in Priorat, subtle Mencía wines from El Bierzo, like those of Ricardo or Raúl Pérez, and also for the classic Riojas with a few years like the Prado Enea de Muga.
This type of glass is also perfect for white wines with a marked barrel ageing. Chivite Colección 125 Blanco or Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva are two clear examples of wines to take full advantage of these glasses.

Wines with body and a lot of substance find their virtues in larger glasses but with a less wider bowl that the Pinot Noir glass. All the aromatic potential of varieties Tempranillo or Cabernet Sauvignon are softened and become more subtle, with an entrance in the mouth towards the middle of the tongue where tannins and acidity harmonise. The Riedel Vinum Cabernet – Merlot or Zalto Bordeaux wine glass perfectly matches red wines from Ribera del Duero, Monastrell from Jumilla or modern-style Riojas such as Remírez de Ganuza.

As for sparkling wines, the important thing is to concentrate the aromatic components and enhance the fineness of the bubbles. In this aspect, the Riedel Veritas Champagne Glass cup does an excellent job when it comes to highlighting the qualities of sparkling wines, both Cava and Champagne.

And finally, we should highlight a very versatile glass for all types of wines, the Zalto Universal. A perfect geometry to hold all kinds of wines if we don’t have a glass for each kind of wine or if we don’t have enough space at home. A master purchase.
