About Can Descregut Vermell

Vermell, the Catalan term for red, is the first hue in the solar spectrum, akin to the crimson of flames and the sanguine fluid coursing through our veins. It is undoubtedly one of the most striking and readily discernible colors in the natural world. Yet, Vermell is also the moniker of a white wine crafted by Can Descregut, a family-run winery nestled in Vilobí del Penedès, at the heart of the Penedès region in Catalonia. Since 2005, they have been producing their own wines from indigenous grape varieties, aiming to encapsulate the essence of the local mineral-rich soils.

It is here that Arantxa De Cara and Marc Milà create Can Descregut Vermell, a white wine that originated as Arantxa's final university project in 2006. She resurrected the xarel·lo vermell grape, releasing the market's first single-varietal wine from this distinct cultivar. A mutation of the xarel·lo, it boasts a slightly thicker and more pigmented skin, yielding a subtly rosé hue. Their commitment to conveying the utmost expression of xarel·lo vermell is so profound that they even saw the grape depicted in a drawing by their daughter Mariona at age five, which now adorns the wine's label. In the vineyard, they have endeavored to revive this ancient variety with absolute respect, eschewing systemic chemicals. Vines are cultivated under organic certification with biodynamic treatments that preserve the natural balance of the mineral terroir, rich with gypsum. When the grapes reach their optimal ripeness, they are hand-harvested and brought straight to the winery. There, they undergo a cold skin maceration for 10 hours, followed by a static debourbage of the free-run juice at 14°C, and then ferment in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. Ultimately, the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks on its fine lees for seven months, with periodic batonnage.

Can Descregut Vermell, as its name symbolizes (red), is the embodiment of passion, vigor, and commitment to preserving the heritage and a grape variety that, despite nearly being eradicated with the rise of Cava, has been fortunately salvaged by Can Descregut. Such is their success that it is now acknowledged as an integral grape of the D.O. Penedès, and their wine has been lauded as the best xarel·lo vermell in the Guia de Vins de Catalunya 2021.

2019

Can Descregut Vermell 2019 is a well-defined white wine. On the nose, this orange wine is complex and subtle, not overly aromatic, blending white fruit (apple and pear), citrus, smoky nuances, earthy and mushroom notes, and a hint of red strawberry. The palate is expansive and gentle, exquisitely silky and refined, underpinned by a mineral core. It has a lingering saline finish.
2018

Can Descregut Vermell 2018 is a white wine sculpted with bouquets of white fruit and citrus, smoky undertones, and hints of earthy and herbaceous elements. On the palate, it is gentle, vibrant, and mineral-rich. A medium-bodied wine with a silky progression, pronounced acidity, and a lingering saline finish.
