About Can Ràfols dels Caus El Rocallís

El Rocallís is a single-variety Manzoni incrocio white wine produced by the Can Ràfols dels Caus winery in the D.O. Penedès, in Catalonia.

El Rocallís is made with clusters that come from vines with ages ranging from 25 to 30 years, which are harvested by hand. The must ferments in French oak barrels where the resulting wine also ages for four or five months, depending on the vintage. Finally it rests in the bottle for 24 months. No selected yeasts are added.

Can Ràfols dels Caus is one of the most interesting wineries in Europe, which would not have been possible without the hard work of Carles Esteva, founder and winemaker, who in 1979 arrived at what was his grandfather’s hundred-year-old estate and restored it to a place where the vines could be cultivated once again.

Can Ràfols dels Caus dates back to the year 992. It is located in an exceptional part of the Catalan region of Penedès: the Massís del Garraf, which rests on a calcareous mass of shallow soils with a mother rock composed of dolomitic limestone strata and even some marine fossil remains. Native varieties are cultivated there, although Carles Esteva's own concern prompted him to introduce strains like Chenin Blanc and Inrocio Manzoni, which is used to make this elegant and mineral El Rocallís wine.
