About Colet Gran Cuvée Brut Nature

The thing about sparkling wine in Catalonia is more of an obligation than a tradition. But the Colet winery has gone over the top with its Colet Gran Cuvée Brut Nature.

In Sant Martí Sarroca, in the heart of the D.O. Penedès (northeastern Spain), the Colet family makes magic. And take our word for it, we are not exaggerating. Isn’t it lovely that this family has been working the same land since 1783? Isn’t that something special? At that time they were sharecroppers dedicated to cultivating and caring for the lands of the Hacienda Romaní until 1984, when they were able to acquire the land they had learned to love for so many years. And because you always take good care of the things you love, at Colet they are absolutely scrupulous in their vineyard cultivation. In total there are about 20 hectares that are organically cultivated, with a great team, where tradition, effort and perseverance are the focusses that influence the day to day operation of this company. Everything they produce is theirs, so the grapes that are harvested are the ones that later become part of the winery. As for the soils, this corner of the D.O. Penedès is an area rich in magnesium and lime, with a very interesting and unique natural acidity for making sparkling wines. Undoubtedly, this base is perfect for Colet to make their Colet Gran Cuvée Brut Nature.

The rest of the process is marked mainly by the traditional method where the base wine (made by pressing the grapes) undergoes two fermentations. The first in stainless steel tanks and the second in the bottle, where it will be in contact with its lees (dead yeast). The resting period for Colet Gran Cuvée Brut Nature, lasts for 24 months (not long). After this Colet Gran Cuvée Brut Nature is uncorked and the lees are removed (an operation known as disgorging) and it is ready to be bottled and released for sale. As a sign of quality and nobility, Colet indicates the date of disgorgement and the vintage on all its bottles.

Defined and tremendously elegant. Colet Gran Cuvée Extra Brut Reserva is an elegant, dry (less than 6 g/L residual sugar) sparkling wine. Its golden yellow colour and fine, well-integrated bubbles will captivate you from the very first sip. The nose will keep you hooked with its aromas of fine lees, ripe fruit, bakery/pastry and sweet spices. The palate is balanced, flavoursome and a little oily, with a long finish.
2018
Colet Gran Cuvée Extra Brut 2018 is a dry sparkling wine, containing approximately 4.2 g/L of sugar. The bouquet is complex and pronounced, featuring notes of dried fruits, lemon tart, smoke, and yeast. On the palate, it exhibits a lively and mineral quality, with well-balanced acidity complementing the ripe fruit flavors.
