About CVNE Corona Gran Reserva

Born in the late 19th century, its production continues to this day. How could the world possibly forsake something as splendid as CVNE Corona Gran Reserva?

The flavour of CVNE Corona Gran Reserva is as enthralling as its history. From the Riojan village of Villalba de Rioja, nestled at the foot of the Gembres crags (in the Sierra de Cantabria), the family-owned CVNE first crafted this white wine at the end of the Civil War. Specifically, the 1939 harvest had been nearly abandoned due to the scarcity of male labour. With most of the grapes left in the field, the few women who took charge that year focused on the red varieties, leaving the majority of the Viura and Garnacha Blanca grapes on the vines. Months later, these same women returned to the vineyards, collecting the now overripe white grapes, many affected by botrytis cinerea. This fungus, also known as noble rot, typically thrives in more humid environments, attacking clusters and berries, causing them to dehydrate. This results in higher sugar concentrations that produce very sweet and smooth wines. While initially seeming like a misfortune for the vineyard, this condition is sought after and quite common in countries like Hungary, where the fame of their Tokaji wines is world-renowned. A similar phenomenon occurred at the CVNE cellars, where CVNE Corona Gran Reserva was almost accidentally born. Nearly a thousand of these initial bottles of CVNE Corona Gran Reserva were nearly forgotten in the cellar until the 1970s when many were uncorked. The discovery was exceedingly pleasant and since then, CVNE has endeavoured to replicate it in years with the necessary climatic conditions.

As we have already mentioned, CVNE Corona Gran Reserva undergoes a very particular production process. Typically, the harvest takes place between September and October; however, for CVNE Corona Gran Reserva, this is delayed until December. It is crucial to remember that for botrytis to develop, humidity is essential, and by managing these timings, we ensure that the evening mists of the area encourage the fungus's growth. The harvest of CVNE Corona Gran Reserva is carried out manually in 20kg boxes and is immediately transferred to the press, where only gentle pressure is applied. The extracted juice is quickly racked into oak barrels, where it ferments at a controlled temperature between 22°C and 24°C. At the end of this process, the temperature of CVNE Corona Gran Reserva is lowered, halting the yeast activity and leaving a residual sugar content of about 30 g/l.

The balance between sweetness and acidity in CVNE Corona Gran Reserva is remarkable. Very few wines achieve this harmony. This balance is also attained thanks to the six months this white wine spends in barrel. Why search abroad for a noble rot wine when you have CVNE Corona Gran Reserva at your fingertips?
