Occasionally, what initially appears strange or unconventional ultimately reveals its true value. An iconic example is the Eiffel Tower. Initially criticised for its "ugly" and disproportionate appearance, it eventually became a symbol of Paris and architectural innovation, admired worldwide for its uniqueness. This same notion of the exceptional also emerges in the world of wine, where the different can indeed make a difference.
The Skaliekop vineyard, situated in Paardeberg, Coastal Region (South Africa), is precisely such an exception. Unlike most of the region, where the soils are granitic, Skaliekop is rooted in shallow shale soils, a challenging terrain for viticulture under dryland conditions. This peculiarity demands resilience from the vines but rewards with a unique concentration and minerality, resulting in an austere, elegant, and distinctive chenin blanc. Its results are so remarkable that Skaliekop is part of South Africa's Old Vine Project, a project dedicated to protecting vines over 35 years old, and contributes to the global prestige of Cape chenin blanc.
David & Nadia, a winery with family roots in Swartland since 1757, embodies this philosophy of authenticity. The winery focuses exclusively on bush vines cultivated under dryland conditions, respecting the diversity of soils, climate, and the identity of the region. Viticulture is conducted organically, and in the winery, intervention is minimal, allowing the terroir and vines to speak for themselves.
David & Nadia Skaliekop is a perfect example of this approach. Planted in 1985 in the shallow shale soils, these chenin blanc vines naturally produce a low yield, ensuring depth and character in the fruit. The harvest was conducted on two dates, and after a meticulous selection, the grapes ferment in small oak at controlled temperatures and age for 11 months in neutral French oak barrels.
David & Nadia Skaliekop reflects the precision, freshness, and authenticity that characterise this project. A chenin blanc that reminds us that the different is special and, moreover, being a very limited production, underscores its rarity and uniqueness.
