About Diego Magaña Anza San Ginés

Occasionally, the simplest aspects of life speak volumes: planting a tree, writing a book, raising a child. These are gestures that leave a lasting impact and connect us with what endures. However, for a winemaker, there is another way to leave a legacy: crafting an age-worthy wine, a project that is savoured, shared, and remembered for decades.

For Diego Magaña, a son of a Navarrese winemaker and a destined viticulturist, this concept is not merely theoretical. After years of learning in various regions worldwide, he chose to embark on his own journey, apart from the family winery. In 2014, he produced his first vintage in Bierzo, under the guidance of Raúl Pérez, and two years later, he began his venture in Rioja, a region that had always been a dream. As he himself states, “Rioja has always been a dream for me because it is one of the few regions in the world where great age-worthy wines can be crafted. My intention is to create wines here that my son can one day enjoy.”

Dominio de Anza is the realisation of that vision. Here, in Rioja Alavesa, Diego has found the perfect terrain to embody his philosophy: minimal intervention, absolute respect for the vineyard, and wines that honestly reflect their origin.

His Anza San Ginés exemplifies this vision. The vineyard, spanning 1 hectare, was planted in two periods: one part in 1900 and the other in 1940, in the San Ginés area, Laguardia (Álava). The harvest is entirely manual, and the wine is crafted with tempranillo, garnacha, graciano, mazuelo, and other varieties. It spends 12 months in used 500-litre barrels, absorbing complexity and structure while retaining freshness and expression of the terroir.

Anza San Ginés is a vibrant wine, full of life and capable of ageing gracefully. An age-worthy wine, the result of a living project that is enjoyed, shared, and transcends generations.
