Rioja se commands attention in the wine world. Yet, it does not do so through vast productions, low prices, or uniform protocols that standardise style. It achieves this through entrepreneurs who have defied convention and redefined the rules of the game. Vintners and oenologists who seek wines with stories to tell, capable of conveying the genuine expression of their land.

One such example is Diego Magaña. The son of a Navarrese winemaker, he embarked on his journey almost out of obligation, and it was not until he began studying oenology that his calling blossomed. After working in various wineries, today, his laboratory is a garage in a Laguardia pavilion, and under his own label, Anza—a tribute to his mother, Esperanza—he pursues the emotion evoked by riojas from historical vintages and dedicates all his efforts to recreating that magic.

Anza San Vicente de la Sonsierra La Canoca is a tempranillo wine born from vineyards situated 650 metres above sea level, in soils with a clay-loam texture, under a continental climate with Atlantic and Mediterranean influences. The harvest is entirely manual, and the wine spends 12 months in used 500-litre French barrels, absorbing structure and complexity without losing the freshness or expression of the terroir.

Anza San Vicente de la Sonsierra La Canoca is the realisation of a dream. It is the product of a new generation of Rioja vintners who, like Diego Magaña, work with passion and respect for the vineyard, yet with the freedom to reinvent tradition.
