About Domaine Arretxea Cuvée Haitza

Arretxea, meaning "the stone house" in the Basque language, is the appellation chosen by Michel and Thérèse Riouspeyrous for their venture initiated in 1989 on the family estate nestled in the heart of the French Basque Country (on the southern slopes of the western Pyrenees). An estate with vines planted on terraces at altitudes ranging from 200 to 400 meters, positioned in such a way that the sunlight graces them with uniform intensity. Preserving the echoes of family tradition and revitalizing vineyards that were on the brink of extinction in the 1970s, this couple is credited with ensuring the survival of the AOC Irouléguy. A denomination that, despite its modest size, boasts wines of distinct character.

Among the wines they produce, Domaine Arretxea Cuvée Haitza is a red wine blend of tannat and cabernet franc. These are old vines rooted in sandstone soils rich in iron oxide, limestone, and clay. Adhering strictly to biodynamic principles, they employ 100% organic products and align their practices with the lunar cycles. Once the grapes are hand-harvested, they are meticulously selected, destemmed, and crushed in the winery. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is subsequently aged for 16 months in 600-liter foudres and demi-muids.

Under the name Haitza, meaning rock in the Basque language, the Riouspeyrous family provides an introduction to a denomination that was originally established by the very monks of Roncesvalles to supply the pilgrims on the Way of St. James. Today, it is recognized as a small appellation with a unique identity that has been reclaimed from obscurity. An opportunity not to be missed.
