The stars we observe in the night sky are at such vast distances that their light may have taken thousands or even millions of years to reach us. Fortunately, there are other "stars" much closer and more accessible: those of the village of L’Etoile, in the southwestern French Jura, where history, geology, and wine naturally converge.
The name L’Etoile (star, in French) has two possible origins. Some attribute it to the five hills surrounding the village, arranged in a star shape. Others point to the presence of starfish fossils still found in the area's soil. Whichever the explanation, both strengthen the connection between the name and the character of the place.
Here lies Domaine de Montbourgeau, a family-owned winery now in its fourth generation. The current head, Nicole Deriaux, began her journey under the guidance of her grandfather, who started the winemaking project in the 1920s. All the vineyards are close to the estate and within the L’Etoile appellation, although some wines are produced under other Jura appellations, such as Côtes du Jura for reds, Crémant du Jura for sparkling wines, or Arbois for the distinctive Vin Jaune.
Over the years, Montbourgeau has established itself as a benchmark in the Jura region, particularly for the quality and authenticity of its whites made from the indigenous savagnin variety, which uniquely reflects the area's mineral character.
Domaine de Montbourgeau L’Etoile Savagnin is an outstanding example of this philosophy. The vineyards of L’Etoile extend across limestone hills surrounded by vegetation, with soils rich in grey and blue marl and marine fossils, which impart a particular complexity to the wines. The savagnin vines are between 15 and 20 years old, and the harvest is conducted manually and late, seeking the optimum point of ripeness. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, and the wine remains on its lees until the malolactic fermentation is complete. Subsequently, it is aged for 9 to 12 months in foudres and barrels, allowing the development of structure, complexity, and an elegant profile.
Faithful to its origin and with a character that indeed shines brightly, Domaine de Montbourgeau L’Etoile Savagnin represents a balance between tradition and quality. A white with personality, good acidity, and a vibrant palate that perfectly reflects the style of the Jura.
